Chinese Drywall Homeowners Anxiously Await Investigation Findings

Friday, August 7, 2009 posted by Larry

Federal regulators are expected to release the findings of Chinese drywall investigations in September. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, if the investigations conclude that a “substantial” electrical, fire or health hazard exists, homeowners living with Chinese drywall will face some tough choices.

For months now, we have reported on homeowner complaints regarding Chinese drywall. Earlier this year, tests conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed that Chinese-manufactured drywall contained elevated levels of strontium sulfide, as well as several organic compounds associated with the production of acrylic paint which were not present in samples of U.S.-made drywall.
According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), most of the 810 Chinese drywall complaints it has received since last December have come from Florida (621). The state with the second highest count is Louisiana (105). Others have come from consumers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia.

I entered into a contract with Mayeaux Construction of Covington, Louisiana to construct a new residence for myself and my family. We lost everything as the result of hurricane Katrina, and decided to re-locate to the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. I purchased this home from Mayeaux Construction in July, 2006. Over the next three years my family (wife and three children under the age of seven) and I suffered numerous health-related issues including, but not limited to, respiratory ailments, dizziness, skin rashes, nosebleeds and chronic fatigue. In addition, numerous electronics/appliances failed (A/C coil three times, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator twice, washing machine, plasma television and doorbell). I advised Phil Mayeaux on June 25, 2009 that I had discovered the presence of Chinese-made drywall in this residence. According to Phil, the Chinese-made drywall must have “slipped through”. I have not been contacted by Phil Mayeaux or any other representative of Mayeaux Construction regarding this issue. It appears as if Phil Mayeaux is attempting to shirk responsibility by hiding behind his attorney. According to Mayeaux Construction’s website, “our new homes are built with the utmost care and attention. The key to a well built home is the use of excellent subcontractors and materials, that are overseen with careful attention to detail. Whether it’s a $150,000 home or a $700,000 home, my customers get the same attention and piece of mind throughout the entire process.” Obviously this is false advertisement, as the construction of my residence was not overseen with care and attention to detail. Furthermore, I would not qualify Chinese-made drywall as an “excellent” material despite Phil Mayeaux’s claim that only excellent materials are utilized. Best of luck to all who have been victimized by contractors who utilized Chinese-made drywall to construct homes.
